A core is what remains when everything unnecessary has been removed.

It is the central material holding a structure together—the part that survives changes in surface, technology, presentation, and time.

Released on December 6, 2024, CORE finds Turntable Kachina working from that center. The EP moves slightly away from the sample-heavy, organic foundations associated with earlier work and toward modern electronic synths, minimal structure, warm lo-fi production, and atmospheric depth.

The sound evolves, but the pulse remains.

Returning to the Essential Material

Turntable Kachina has always worked with layers.

Samples, organic instrumentation, drums, bass, electronic textures, and wide atmospheric spaces have all contributed to the project’s identity. On CORE, those materials are reconsidered through a more restrained and synth-driven approach.

Restraint does not mean the music has become smaller.

Removing excess can make the remaining elements feel more substantial. A kick carries more weight when the surrounding space is clear. A melody becomes more memorable when it is not competing with unnecessary information. A repeated phrase can hold attention when small changes are allowed to matter.

CORE asks what Turntable Kachina sounds like when the project returns to its most essential relationships: rhythm, atmosphere, repetition, and physical low end.

Four Tracks, One Evolving Center

The current EP brings together four tracks:

  1. “Regrowth”
  2. “Mythillogical”
  3. “OH LORD OH LORD”
  4. “Geostationary Orbit”

Each recording approaches the Turntable Kachina identity from a different angle.

“Regrowth” suggests return and continued development. “Mythillogical” expands the project through collaboration with Michael Patrick Ceol and Bear Cole. “OH LORD OH LORD” brings an earlier point in the catalog into the EP’s present context. “Geostationary Orbit” connects movement with suspension—a body traveling constantly while maintaining its relationship with one point below.

Placed together, the four tracks do not read as isolated singles. They become different views of the same core.

A Shift Toward Synth-Driven Space

Synthesizers can create almost any imaginable sound, but unlimited possibility does not automatically create identity.

The important decisions involve shape, placement, and purpose.

On CORE, synth textures establish both atmosphere and structure. Lush beds can make the music feel expansive without removing its intimacy. A restrained electronic melody can provide direction while leaving enough room for rhythm and low end to remain physically present.

The shift toward synthesizers does not erase Turntable Kachina’s earlier production language. It translates that language into different material.

Texture remains important. Space remains active. Repetition still changes through attention. The music still values the point where electronic sound becomes physical.

The instruments change, but the listening philosophy remains recognizable.

Lo-Fi Is More Than Surface Noise

Lo-fi production is sometimes reduced to a collection of obvious effects: vinyl crackle, softened drums, filtered frequencies, and nostalgic degradation.

Those sounds can be useful, but the deeper value of lo-fi production is its permission to retain character.

A sound does not need to be polished until every irregularity disappears. Warmth, saturation, limited frequency range, and imperfect edges can help a track feel present and human.

CORE uses lo-fi influence as part of its physical vocabulary.

The warmth surrounding a sound can make it feel handled rather than manufactured. A softened transient changes the perceived distance of a drum. A slightly worn texture can give a modern synthesizer a sense of memory.

Lo-fi becomes an approach to material, not a decorative filter.

The Snowball Release

CORE is also a 1st Drop Music Snowball Release.

Rather than remaining permanently fixed at its first publication, a Snowball Release is designed to grow as new tracks are added over time. The audience experiences the project as an evolving body of work instead of waiting for every piece to be completed before hearing any of it.

That format changes the relationship between release and process.

Traditional albums often hide their development. Listeners receive the final sequence after the creative decisions have been completed. A Snowball Release makes growth visible. The work can establish a center, expand around it, and allow later material to change how the earlier tracks are understood.

For an EP titled CORE, the format is especially appropriate.

The core exists first. The structure grows from it.

The latest version will remain available through the official release page and the complete Turntable Kachina catalog.

Collaboration Expands the Center

“Mythillogical” brings Michael Patrick Ceol, Bear Cole, and Turntable Kachina together within the EP.

Collaboration can introduce new material without dissolving the identity of the central project. Another artist brings different instincts, musical history, and ways of hearing. The goal is not to force those differences into uniformity. It is to discover where they connect.

Within CORE, the collaboration broadens the project’s creative field while reinforcing its place in the 1st Drop Music ecosystem.

Turntable Kachina’s music remains distinct, but it is not isolated. The label provides a network where artists, releases, remixes, production ideas, and long-running creative relationships can intersect.

That network becomes part of the EP’s story without replacing its center.

Repetition as a Form of Focus

The word “repetition” can imply that nothing is changing.

In electronic music, repetition often makes change possible.

When a rhythmic pattern remains stable, the listener becomes more sensitive to smaller events. A filter opening gradually, a percussion hit entering late, a bass note changing length, or a texture disappearing for one cycle can redirect the entire experience.

CORE uses that sensitivity.

The music does not need to replace its central idea constantly. It can remain with the pulse long enough for the listener to understand its weight and internal movement.

This is one of the qualities connecting Turntable Kachina’s studio production to DJ culture. A groove becomes meaningful through duration, timing, and its relationship with what surrounds it.

Evolution Without Abandonment

Artistic growth is sometimes presented as a dramatic rejection of everything that came before.

CORE suggests another model.

An artist can move toward a more modern, minimalist, synth-driven sound while preserving the deeper principles behind earlier work. Evolution can happen through refinement rather than erasure.

Turntable Kachina does not abandon texture, atmosphere, physical rhythm, or layered listening. The project examines which elements are fundamental and rebuilds around them.

That is the meaning of the title.

The core is not a genre, one piece of equipment, or a fixed production technique. It is a way of hearing:

  • Rhythm should have weight.
  • Atmosphere should shape the environment.
  • Repetition should reward attention.
  • Technology should serve the composition.
  • Space should remain an active part of the music.

Everything else can continue changing.

Keep Listening as CORE Grows

Because CORE is a Snowball Release, its story is not limited to the current track list.

New additions can expand the sound, introduce new connections, and change the balance of the EP. The release becomes a living part of the catalog—one with an established center but an unfinished outer edge.

That makes listening now different from listening later.

The current four-track sequence documents one stage in the project’s development. Future versions will carry that stage forward rather than replace it.
